The Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC) stated that it has confirmed through its monitoring of police stations and informal detention centers in the Oromia Regional State that suspects are being threatened, intimidated, and beaten during arrest and interrogation.

It stated that suspects were being held in police stations and formal detention centers without being brought to court and without being charged, under the pretext of "current circumstances"; that family members were being detained in place of suspects in areas with security problems; and that there was a practice of detaining people who had been acquitted by a court decision under the pretext of "current circumstances"

Additionally, the detention of people in civil cases at certain police stations without a court order, the lack of food for suspects detained far from their homes, and the lack of nearby restaurants to purchase food was cited as challenges.

It also said that it is a concern that suspects do not receive medical services when they fall ill and are forced to pay 500 to 1,000 birr to escort police to medical centers.

The commission stated that “systematic beatings of suspects are not being carried out” at the police stations it monitored.
