On the day that Ethiopia inaugurated the dam that Ethiopia has been building for the past 14 years, the Egyptian Foreign Minister submitted a letter of complaint to the United Nations Security Council against Ethiopia's unilateral action.

In the past years, the dam has been filled with water, and despite repeated talks between Ethiopia, Egypt, and Sudan regarding the continuation of the work, the construction of the dam was completed and officially inaugurated.

Following the inauguration of the dam, which was attended by leaders and senior officials of various African countries, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelati sent a letter to the President of the United Nations Security Council expressing his country's opposition.

In his letter to the Security Council, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that Ethiopia's construction of the Renaissance Dam "is a one-sided project that violates international laws and regulations governing the East Nile Basin."

It took 14 years to complete the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, which is the largest electricity generator in Africa. During this time, Egypt had been negotiating with Ethiopia several times.

Sudan and Egypt, who are concerned that the dam, costing approximately $5 billion, will reduce their water supply, have requested that Ethiopia sign a binding agreement regarding the water supply and management; however, this has not been accepted.
