Egypt is disappointed that Kenyan President William Ruto attended the inauguration of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, Egypt's Ambassador to Kenya, Hatem Youssry Hosni, told the speaker of the country's parliament.
Kenyan Parliament Speaker Moses Watangula, who received the ambassador, urged Egypt to consult with all riparian countries rather than focusing "only on Ethiopia" regarding "any concerns" related to Nile waters.
According to a Kenyan media report, one of the issues discussed in detail during a meeting between Kenyan Parliament Speaker Watangula and Egyptian Ambassador Hosni on Wednesday, September 25, 2025, was the Nile water issue, which has been a source of disagreement between Cairo and Addis Ababa.
The Egyptian ambassador has expressed his dissatisfaction with the massive Renaissance Dam that Ethiopia inaugurated two weeks ago.
Ambassador Hosni reported that the construction of the Renaissance Dam “contradicts international law and does not respect the established legal framework.”
The ambassador added that he had been trying for more than a decade to sign a binding agreement that would protect his country’s rights and ensure equitable use of the Nile waters.
