ECOWAS Health Agency Delivers €1.5m Laboratory Equipment to Guinea-Bissau

Guinea-Bissau has received laboratory equipment valued at 1.51 million euros to strengthen disease diagnostics and surveillance at its National Public Health Laboratory.

The equipment includes PCR and immunological testing systems, general laboratory equipment, laboratory products and materials, as well as reagents and consumables, according to the West African Health Organisation.

The handover is part of the second phase of the PROALAB project, which is aimed at strengthening laboratory and disease-surveillance systems across the ECOWAS region.

Under the project’s first component, reference laboratories in five countries — Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Senegal and The Gambia — are benefiting from equipment procurements intended to improve regional laboratory capacity.

Dr Melchior Athanase Joël C. Aïssi, director-general of WAHO, formally handed over the equipment to Guinea-Bissau’s minister of public health, Commodore Dr Quinhin Nantote, at the National Public Health Laboratory.

The ceremony was witnessed by Ngozi Ukaeje, ECOWAS resident representative in Guinea-Bissau, alongside WAHO’s country focal point, Dr Plácido Cardoso, and Baltazar Cá, director-general of the National Public Health Laboratory.

The investment is intended to improve the laboratory’s ability to detect and confirm diseases, support epidemiological surveillance and respond to public health emergencies.

WAHO said the equipment would also provide the laboratory with additional technical and operational resources to support the sustainable development of Guinea-Bissau’s national diagnostic and laboratory surveillance capacity.
