Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has appointed Getnet Tadesse, chief executive of the Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation (EBC), as commissioner of the Ethiopian Unity Works Commission, replacing Ambassador Sheferaw Shigute.
The commission confirmed that Getnet officially assumed the role on August 20, 2025. His appointment marks another leadership reshuffle within the federal body tasked with coordinating national unity projects.
Getnet has spent more than two decades in Ethiopia’s media sector. He began his career at Amhara Media Corporation, the regional broadcaster, before taking leadership roles at Walta Media and Communications and later as director of the Ethiopian Press Agency. In December 2023, parliament approved his appointment as CEO of EBC, the state broadcaster, where he has overseen content reform and efforts to position the corporation as a modern, pan-African platform.
Under Getnet, EBC has accelerated its digital transformation. In August 2025, the corporation launched the Digital EBC app, a homegrown platform offering live streaming of radio, television, and Dotstream content. The public-facing app, EBC: News, Live & Entertainment, provides multilingual news and entertainment on demand.
