Large-scale power outages have hit major Sudanese cities following drone attacks on key power facilities, officials and witnesses said.

The blackouts affected the capital, Khartoum, controlled by the Sudanese army, as well as the port city of Port Sudan, headquarters of General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan. Witnesses reported seeing large flames and smoke rising from power plants in Atbara, located in East Nile state under military control.

The attacks targeted the Al-Muqrin transmission centre, a critical hub for Sudan’s electricity supply, and the Al-Murqi power station, which draws power from the country’s largest hydroelectric plant. The strikes disrupted electricity distribution across major urban centres.

Sudan has been embroiled in a protracted civil conflict between forces loyal to General Burhan and the rival transitional government led by General Hamdan Dagalo. The latest attacks underscore the vulnerability of the country’s infrastructure amid ongoing clashes.
