Dr. Sisay Awgchew, who was charged with supporting the conflict in the Amhara region, was arrested at the prison gate when he was released on bail, his lawyer told the BBC.

Dr. Sisay, whose case file was amended weeks ago by Dr. Wondwosen Assefa, was released on bail on 100,000 birr by the Federal High Court, February 23, 2025, his lawyer, Ato Solomon Gezahegn, said.

The defendant, who was granted bail, was "taken into police custody" when he left the Kilinto prison on February 25, 2018, in the afternoon, his lawyer said.

His lawyer, Ato Solomon Gezahegn, told the BBC that Dr. Sisay family confirmed to him that the defendant was taken away from the prison gate in a car.

Dr. Sisay Awgchew was charged in 2023 with "killing Amhara regional state officials" and "committing acts of terrorism with the intention of forcibly seizing power in the region and then the federal government" by siding with the Fano militants.
