The number of confirmed Ebola cases in the Democratic Republic of Congo has risen to 282 after 19 new infections were detected, according to data released by the communications ministry on Sunday.

The ministry said 264 cases have been recorded in Ituri province, with 15 in North Kivu and three in South Kivu, underscoring the concentration of infections in the country’s conflict-affected east.

The confirmed death toll stands at 42, while officials continue to monitor the trajectory of an outbreak that is linked to the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola virus disease.

The World Health Organization has assessed the outbreak risk as very high at national level and high at regional level, citing concerns over potential cross-border spread.

The current outbreak is the Democratic Republic of Congo’s 17th recorded Ebola epidemic, with transmission patterns once again emerging in the east, where armed conflict and population displacement have repeatedly hampered surveillance and response operations.
