A domestic worker has been arrested in Gondar after allegedly abducting a seven-year-old girl from Addis Ababa and demanding millions of birr in ransom, according to the Addis Ababa Police.

The suspect, identified by police as Mekdes Moges, had worked for three months at the home of the girl’s parents in Bole Bulbula before leaving after seeking permission to visit her family, the police said. She allegedly returned about two months later with an accomplice and took the girl, Fiona Solomon, from a place where she was playing on August 28, 2026.

The family was subsequently contacted by the alleged accomplice and told to pay 4 million birr for the child’s release, according to the police. Fearing threats, the family deposited 370,000 birr into a bank account.

The Addis Ababa Police, working with other security agencies and using technology to track the suspects, determined that the girl had been taken to the Amhara region.
