Djibouti Joins Artemis Accords as 72nd Signatory

Djibouti has joined the Artemis Accords, becoming the 72nd country to commit to principles governing peaceful and sustainable exploration of space.

Djibouti’s Ambassador to the United States, Mohamed Siad Douale, signed the agreement on behalf of the country on September 14, 2026, at NASA headquarters in Washington, D.C.

NASA Deputy Administrator Matthew Anderson and US Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Frank Garcia attended the signing ceremony.

The Artemis Accords, established in 2020 by the United States and seven other countries, set out principles for responsible civil space exploration, including sustainable activity and the peaceful use of space.

Djibouti’s accession adds to its emerging involvement in space activities. The country’s first two satellites were launched from Vandenberg Space Force Base in the United States in 2023 and 2024.

Djibouti also participated in a US-Africa technical and regulatory space training meeting in April 2026, focused on building knowledge and cooperation around space activities.

The United States and NASA jointly lead Washington’s engagement with countries participating in the Artemis Accords.

By signing the agreement, Djibouti joins the United States and 70 other countries in endorsing its principles for sustainable civil space activity and peaceful exploration.
