Displaced Ethiopians Urge Government to Return Them to Villages in New Year

Displaced people from the Amhara region who were displaced due to the war in the north of the country and are staying at Adi Aqi School in Mekelle city of Tigray region, Debre Birhan Bakello camp in Amhara region and Bambasi camp in Benishangul Gumuz region, told reporters that they want to return to their villages in the New Year.

An IDP in Debre Birhan Bakello camp recalled that they used to celebrate the New Year with joy, but now they are spending it with despair.

“What kind of New Year do we have when we are sitting and waiting for death?” The IDP, who described their situation, explained that even in this situation, they have been waiting for years to return to their village.

Although they are currently in dire straits, they have asked the government to address the security situation in the country in the new year and return them to their villages.

Recalling the previous New Year celebrations, he expressed his deep sadness and expressed his wish, "I hope that in the new year we will start living like humans and that our children will be saved from persecution and hunger."

Two displaced people from the Welega Zone of the Aromia Region and residing in the Bambasi IDP camp in the Benishangul Gumuz Region recalled that they were displaced from their village in 2021 and are still in the camp without any solution.

They expressed their joy at the transformation of the country, including the completion of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, and their desire to be part of this transformation by returning to their villages and working, freeing themselves from the burden of aid.
