The displaced asked, "How can we pay taxes while living by begging for flour?"

Displaced people from Kiremu district of East Wollega zone of Oromia region and Dano district of West Shewa zone who are currently sheltering in Jara and China shelters in Amhara region expressed their grievances to Addis Standard, saying that they were told that the land they came from was "forcibly abandoned" and that "if you don't pay taxes, it will be confiscated."

Another displaced person from Kiremu district of East Wollega zone, who is currently sheltering in Jara shelter, said that although their land tax is paid by their cousin who lives in Kiremu, "someone else is currently cultivating their land."

In a response to Kiremu District Deputy Administrator Ato Sethu Waisa denied the allegations, saying, "It was not said that land would be confiscated.

He added, "The tax payment has not been requested from people who have been displaced from their villages and are sheltering in shelters. If there is any leadership that says that, we will investigate."
