Middle-distance runner Derbe Wolteji was banned from all sporting events for two years by the Court of Arbitration for Sport in February 2025 for refusing to provide a doping sample.

The athlete also ruled that her results since she refused to provide a sample should be disqualified.

Derbe's second-place silver medal at the World Indoor Championships in Nanjing, China, in March 2025, was among those to be disqualified as a result of the decision.

The Ethiopian Anti-Doping Agency has defended the athlete, saying she did not commit any wrongdoing, but World Athletics has asked the Court of Arbitration for Sport to impose a four-year ban.

The court said on Thursday that Derbe will be banned from all sporting events for two years.

“All results obtained by the athlete from 25 February 2025 until the date of the court’s decision shall be disqualified,” the court said in a statement.

The sole judge appointed by the court confirmed that Derbe “failed to provide a convincing reason for her failure to provide a sample” but “confirmed that this was not intentional.”

The ban imposed on the athlete will begin on July 8, 2025, and will last until June 30, 2027, the Court of Arbitration for Sport announced.
