Former House of People’s Representatives member Dessalegn Chanie has decided to step away from direct political involvement, saying he will focus on professional work, private sector activities and planned business ventures after ending his parliamentary career.

Dessalegn, who represented voters in Bahir Dar for five years from 2022 to 2026, announced that he would not join or support any political party for the time being following the conclusion of his parliamentary mandate.

In a statement reflecting on his public service journey, Dessalegn said his next phase would involve contributing to the country through his profession, exploring startup ideas and giving more time to his family after years of political engagement.

Before becoming a lawmaker, Dessalegn worked in academia, holding teaching and leadership positions at universities. He later became involved in civic activism, including efforts to draw attention to the spread of water hyacinth in Lake Tana through a local civil society initiative.

He said his involvement in public affairs over the past decade included civic work, political organising and parliamentary representation, allowing him to advocate for groups that lacked representation.

“Being able to become a true voice for those without a voice has given me a great sense of honour and pride,” Dessalegn said while reflecting on his time in politics.

During his parliamentary tenure, he expressed appreciation to lawmakers from different political parties, government officials, parliamentary employees, journalists and media organisations for their engagement and support.

He also thanked individuals who supported him during the 45 days he spent in detention more than two years ago, saying they provided assistance through prayers and solidarity.

Dessalegn said Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed had invited him to continue working together and had recognised the value of issues he raised during parliamentary discussions. He added that he appreciated the prime minister’s acknowledgement and respect.

Despite ending his direct political participation, Dessalegn said he would remain engaged in social and national issues through his expertise. He said he intends to contribute to initiatives aimed at strengthening unity among the Amhara people, promoting coexistence with other communities and improving the livelihoods of Ethiopians.

The former lawmaker’s announcement follows the completion of the current parliamentary session, ending his formal role as a member of the federal legislature.
