Eleven people deported from the US and detained in Ghana have sued the country's government, their lawyer has told the BBC.

Oliver Barker Wormaor said it was illegal for the deported individuals to be held in a military camp without violating Ghanaian law.

The attorney added that the government wants the individuals to be brought to justice and to explain why they were held against their will.

The government has not yet commented on the lawsuit, but has previously announced that it will accept an additional 40 individuals for deportation from the United States.

Opposition party member Jusupa Aderasse called for an immediate halt to the reception of refugees until the House of People's Representatives ratifies the agreement the country signed with the United States, saying this should be implemented in accordance with Ghanaian law.

Last week, Ghanaian President John Mahama announced that he would accept 14 West African nationals who had been deported from the United States under an agreement with the United States.
