“It makes absolutely no sense for the United States to talk about its desire to annex Greenland,” said Mette Frederiksen. “The United States has no right to secede from one of the three territories in the Danish kingdom,” she said.

The prime minister made the comment after Katie Miller, the wife of Stephen Miller, one of Trump's aides, shared a post on her Twitter page that placed the American flag on a map of Greenland and included the text "Coming Soon."

Trump has repeatedly suggested that Greenland could join the United States, citing its strategic location and mineral wealth.

After Prime Minister Frederiksen made the comments, Trump continued to insist that the territory would belong to the United States.

In a statement on the Danish government’s website, Frederiksen said she was sending a “direct” message to the US.

“I urge the US to stop threatening a country that is a close historical ally and another country and another people that is clearly not for sale.”

Hours after the prime minister said this, President Trump said aboard Air Force One, "We need Greenland for national security reasons. And Denmark can't do that."
