A renewed battle for student and entry level premium laptop buyers is emerging between Dell Technologies and Apple after Dell introduced a cheaper version of its XPS 13 lineup priced to compete directly with Apple’s recently launched MacBook Neo.

Dell said the device will retail from 699 US dollars, with a reduced 599 US dollar price available to students aged 16 and older during the back to school period.

The launch expands Dell’s push into lower consumer price categories months after the company outlined plans to compete more aggressively across the broader personal computer market.

Apple entered the segment earlier this year when it introduced the MacBook Neo at 599 US dollars, with student pricing lowered to 500 US dollars.

Dell executives signalled that Apple’s move reinforced demand for lower cost premium laptops aimed at students and general consumers.

Dell said the new XPS 13 would become the lightest and thinnest model in the company’s lineup, weighing roughly half a pound less than Apple’s competing device while also carrying a larger display.
