Residents of Debre Tabor, the capital of the South Gondar Zone in the Amhara region, have reported casualties and property damage in clashes between Fano militants and government forces.

The deadly clashes in the city come about a month after tensions flared in other areas of the zone, residents told the BBC.

Four residents, who spoke to the BBC on condition of anonymity for their safety, said they began hearing gunfire on February 11, 2025.

They did not specify the number of fatalities, but described the damage as "serious."

Another resident, who stated that "the Civil Service Department, the Zonal Police Department, and several police offices were burned down," said that the damage to government institutions was extensive.

The Amhara Regional State Administration has not yet commented on the conflict that occurred in Debre Tabor town; BBC's efforts to obtain more information from the South Gondar Zone and Debre Tabor town administration officials as of Thursday evening were unsuccessful as their phones were not answered.
