Dangote Named African Energy Person of the Year for 2026

The African Energy Chamber has named Aliko Dangote as its 2026 African Energy Person of the Year, recognising his investments in industrial infrastructure and energy supply chains across Africa, including the continent’s largest private oil refining project.

The annual award is given by the African Energy Industry platform to individuals it says have strengthened energy security, infrastructure development, local content and investment in African energy markets.

In its announcement, the chamber highlighted Dangote’s role as founder of the Dangote Group, a diversified industrial conglomerate with operations spanning cement, fertiliser, sugar and other manufacturing sectors across Africa.

Central to the recognition is the Dangote Refinery in Lagos, Nigeria, which the chamber described as a landmark downstream oil project. The facility has a reported capacity of about 650,000 barrels per day and is designed to produce petrol, diesel, aviation fuel and petrochemicals, alongside fertiliser output.

The chamber said the refinery has helped reduce Nigeria’s reliance on imported refined products and contributed to improved fuel supply stability in the region. It also noted that the project faced financing constraints, technical complexity and construction delays before becoming operational.

Refined products from the facility are already being supplied to markets in Africa and beyond, including parts of Europe and the United States, according to the announcement, with further expansion of export flows expected.

Beyond the energy sector, the chamber pointed to Dangote’s broader industrial strategy, which it said focuses on building domestic manufacturing capacity, strengthening supply chains and expanding value addition within Africa rather than exporting raw materials.

The statement also referenced the Aliko Dangote Foundation, which supports initiatives in health, education and poverty reduction across Africa, including vaccination campaigns and food security programmes delivered in partnership with international organisations and governments.

Dangote is expected to receive the award at a ceremony organised by the African Energy Chamber later this year.
