Cooperation for Ethiopian Unity Warns of Possible Withdrawal Over Election Concerns

Cooperation for Ethiopian Unity has warned it may reconsider its participation in the upcoming electoral process. The alliance cited widespread procedural failures, administrative irregularities, and political pressure during pre-election preparations.

The group said the credibility of the election depends on genuine participation rather than a symbolic process. It claimed conditions are deteriorating as the vote approaches, with increasing restrictions on political actors.

The alliance documented multiple incidents during candidate registration. It alleged technical failures prevented many of its candidates from registering, especially in Central Ethiopia and Oromia regions.

It also raised concerns about voter intimidation, pressure on candidates and their families, and irregularities such as voter card duplication and misuse of polling stations.

The group called for urgent reforms including ending armed conflict, releasing political detainees, and ensuring inclusive dialogue. It warned that failure to address these concerns could force it to withdraw from the election.

The National Election Board of Ethiopia has not yet responded to the allegations.
