Colorado, Wyoming Blood Supply Remains Under Pressure As Red Cross Urges Donations

The American Red Cross is urging people in Colorado and Wyoming to donate blood as the organisation continues to manage a national blood crisis and a four-year summer low in blood supplies. The Red Cross said the addition of just three donors at each blood drive could help stabilise supplies and ensure hospitals continue to have access to blood products needed for patients.

The appeal follows the organisation’s declaration of only the second blood crisis in its history in late July. Thousands of donors across Colorado and Wyoming have since given blood, but supplies remain under significant pressure as communities return to school schedules and people finish summer holidays.

Lower donor turnout during the transition into the school year can have a significant effect on available blood products, particularly while supplies remain at unusually low seasonal levels, the Red Cross said. The organisation is encouraging eligible donors of all blood types to schedule appointments through its Blood Donor App, its website or by telephone.

People who cannot donate can also support the campaign by encouraging eligible friends, relatives and colleagues to give blood. As an incentive, donors who give blood between August 1 and August 31, 2026 will receive a 20 US dollars Amazon gift card by email, according to the Red Cross.
