Colombian Drug Trafficker Sentenced to 12½ Years in US Prison

A Colombian national has been sentenced to 150 months in prison in the United States for his role in a conspiracy to traffic hundreds of kilograms of cocaine destined for the US, the Department of Justice said. Aimer Alberto Alvaran Posada, 52, was convicted for participating in a cocaine trafficking operation linked to the Western Bloc of the Clan del Golfo (CDG), a Colombian paramilitary group designated by the US Department of State in December 2025 as both a Foreign Terrorist Organization and a Specially Designated Global Terrorist.

According to court documents, Alvaran Posada helped coordinate a 2018 plan to produce 500 kilograms of cocaine for sale to Mexican buyers, knowing the shipment was ultimately intended for the United States. Prosecutors said he secured approval for the transaction from the commander of the group's Northern Bloc and chaired multiple meetings to organise the operation. US authorities said approximately 363 kilograms of cocaine were seized during the investigation that led to Alvaran Posada's conviction.

While involved in the conspiracy, Alvaran Posada was informed by Dairo Antonio Úsuga David, the former leader of Clan del Golfo, that he was being considered to command the organisation's Western Bloc. Prosecutors said the promotion would have placed him in charge of setting cocaine prices, overseeing production and authorising drug transportation across territory controlled by the group. Instead, Alvaran Posada was arrested in Colombia in 2021 on US charges and later extradited to the United States. He pleaded guilty to conspiracy to traffic cocaine on August 27, 2025.

The investigation was led by the FBI's Miami Field Office with support from the Colombian National Police, the FBI's legal attaché office in Bogotá and the US Department of Justice's Office of International Affairs. The case forms part of the US government's Homeland Security Task Force initiative, which targets transnational criminal organisations, drug cartels, human trafficking networks and other cross-border criminal groups through coordinated law enforcement operations.
