Fighting has resumed this week in the northern regions of Amhara and Tigray, as Ethiopian government troops and Tigray fighters clash amid rising tensions. Access to the affected areas remains limited, making independent verification difficult.

A security source described the situation as “deteriorating and escalating,” with most confrontations concentrated in areas under Amhara regional control.

Diplomatic sources say Tigray forces are engaged against both the Ethiopian army and Amhara militias. “The recent clashes have been confirmed as ongoing; however, as of Thursday, there is nothing we can ascertain about the situation,” one source added.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, writing in Tigrinya on social media, accused individuals within the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) of seeking to “escalate Tigray into another round of warfare.”

Getachew Reda, former acting president of the Tigray region, countered that TPLF leaders are employing military tactics to incite violence against youth.
