Citi Names André Ross to Lead South African Operations

Citigroup has appointed André Ross as its country officer and banking head in South Africa, placing a veteran corporate banker at the helm of its operations in one of the continent’s largest financial markets.

Ross joins Citi from JPMorgan Chase, where he led global corporate banking for sub-Saharan Africa as managing director. His appointment follows the departure of Peter Taylor, whom he replaces as the bank’s senior executive in the country.

Citi said Ross would oversee its South African business and cited his experience across investment banking, development finance and corporate banking accumulated over more than 20 years in the financial sector.

Prior to his role at JPMorgan, Ross held senior positions at Barclays and Absa Group, gaining experience in regional banking operations and client coverage.

The leadership change comes at a time of heightened competition among financial institutions in South Africa, where banks have intensified recruitment efforts for senior executives and dealmakers.

Several major lenders have reshuffled leadership teams in recent months, including Deutsche Bank, Absa and Standard Bank Group.

Absa recently hired senior executives from Standard Bank, including Zaid Moola, who was appointed head of corporate and investment banking, and Musa Motloung, who became the group’s strategic risk officer.

Citi described South Africa as a key base for its activities in sub-Saharan Africa and said the market remains central to its regional operations.

The US lender said it has operated in South Africa since 1920 and characterised itself as the country’s largest foreign bank.

Ross is expected to oversee client relationships and strategic operations across both corporate and public-sector banking activities in the market.
