China has announced its refusal to join the planned nuclear disarmament talks between the United States and Russia.
This decision comes after US President Donald Trump requested that Beijing be included in the talks.
In a statement, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiaqun said that it is neither reasonable nor realistic for China to be treated as an equal with the two major nuclear powers.
The spokesperson explained that the United States and Russia, which hold more than 90 percent of the world's total nuclear stockpiles, have a special and primary responsibility in disarmament.
China has also stated that it will keep its nuclear power at the minimum level necessary for national security and will not engage in an arms race with any country.
President Trump reportedly discussed the nuclear issue with Russian President Vladimir Putin and expressed hope that China would also participate in the process.
However, China reportedly rejected the trilateral talks, stating its own position.
