Cerebras Secures Expanded OpenAI Commitment in Multibillion-Dollar Compute Deal

Cerebras Systems has secured an expanded commitment from OpenAI in a multibillion-dollar agreement that will see the ChatGPT maker spend more than 20 billion US dollars over the next three years on computing infrastructure. Founded in 2015 and headquartered in Sunnyvale, California, Cerebras has positioned itself as a challenger in AI computing by building wafer-scale engines.

The agreement builds on an earlier deal struck in January, under which OpenAI committed to purchasing up to 750 megawatts of computing capacity from Cerebras in a transaction initially valued at more than 10 billion US dollars. Under the expanded arrangement, OpenAI will access servers powered by Cerebras’ specialised chips as it scales its artificial intelligence systems.

The structure also includes warrants that could give OpenAI a minority equity stake in Cerebras, with the size of the potential holding linked to the level of spending under the agreement. Separately, OpenAI has reportedly agreed to provide about 1 billion US dollars in funding to support Cerebras in developing data centres.

The deal underscores the massive infrastructure investments required to support the rapid growth of artificial intelligence technologies and reflects the intensifying competition in the AI computing sector.
