Carrefour to Begin Ethiopian Operations on December 8

Carrefour is scheduled to begin operations in Ethiopia on December 8 through a partnership with Queen’s Supermarket, nearly a year after the French retail group announced plans to enter the market, according to MIDROC Investment Group.

The group issued the clarification after reports circulated on social media claiming that Carrefour would open outlets in selected areas of Addis Ababa within two weeks. MIDROC said the reports were inaccurate and confirmed December 8, 2026, as the official commencement date.

Carrefour announced its partnership with Queen’s Supermarket PLC, a MIDROC subsidiary, on January 5, outlining plans to rebrand existing stores and expand its presence in Ethiopia. The initial agreement covered 13 existing outlets, with plans to open 17 additional stores by 2028.

The partnership is structured around a franchise and supply agreement under which Carrefour will provide its brand and retail expertise, alongside access to products and its international retail network.

The January announcement envisaged the first rebranded stores opening in the first half of 2026. The latest statement from MIDROC, however, sets the start date for December, without explaining the change in timetable.

The entry of Carrefour, which operates internationally through a combination of franchising and other retail arrangements, will introduce its brand into Ethiopia’s organised supermarket sector through an established local operator.
