A deteriorating chemical storage tank at a GKN Aerospace facility in Garden Grove, Southern California, continues to pose a severe risk of rupture or toxic release. The incident has forced the evacuation of more than 40,000 residents across Orange County.

The tank contains methyl methacrylate, a highly flammable industrial chemical. It began overheating and venting vapours earlier in the week, triggering a widening emergency response.

The Orange County Fire Authority is leading containment operations, deploying cooling systems and barrier measures. Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency as evacuation zones expanded.

The Environmental Protection Agency is monitoring the situation. Officials have warned that internal temperature increases and pressure instability continue to challenge containment efforts.

Air quality assessments remain ongoing. No toxic plume has been detected so far, but conditions could change rapidly. Federal agencies including FEMA are coordinating with local responders.

GKN Aerospace is cooperating with emergency authorities as investigations and containment work proceed at the facility.
