Authorities have released a person of interest detained in connection with a shooting at Brown University that left two students dead and nine others injured, officials said Sunday night. Investigators indicated that the inquiry has taken a “different direction,” though details were not disclosed.

The announcement came more than 12 hours after law enforcement reported detaining an individual in relation to the attack, a development that had initially suggested swift progress in identifying the shooter. With the release, the person responsible for the killings remains at large.

Mayor Brett Smiley acknowledged the community’s unease. “We understand that this is likely to generate renewed anxiety within our community,” he said.

The shooting, which occurred Saturday afternoon, prompted a campus-wide lockdown and hours of disruption across surrounding Providence neighborhoods. Hundreds of officers scoured the area while students and staff were advised to shelter in place. The lockdown was lifted early Sunday, but authorities have yet to provide information on a possible motive.
