Brazil's Supreme Court has upheld the 27-year and three-month prison sentence handed down to former President Jair Bolsonaro for plotting a coup after his election defeat.

Judge Alexandre de Moraes ruled on Tuesday that the case was final and no further appeals could be filed.

Bolsonaro, 70, was found guilty of plotting a coup to retain power after losing the 2022 election to his rival, Lula da Silva, as a European ally.

He is said to be serving his sentence in a federal police prison in the capital, Brasilia.

The former president was transferred from house arrest to prison on Saturday, where he had been under house arrest amid fears he could escape.

At a hearing on Sunday, Bolsonaro admitted that he tried to open a cuff on his ankle "until he realized what he was doing."

Bolsonaro, who argued that he had no intention of escaping, denied the allegations, saying the damage to the controls was caused by a "fear of danger" caused by the drug.

Judge Moraes ordered Bolsonaro to receive full medical care on Tuesday.
