Residents of East Borena Zone said that the main road from Ngale Borena to Moyale has been closed for more than two months due to the worsening security situation in the border areas of Oromia and Somali regions.
However, officials from the two regions have given conflicting accounts of the road's condition.
Residents said that the closure of the road has severely disrupted transport movement as peace efforts between the two communities have not yielded tangible results.
An official from the East Borena Zone confirmed that the road is still closed, while an official from the Somali Regional State argued that “the road is open.”
Residents cited the failure of the peace and reconciliation process as the reason for the disruption of activities.
Residents said that the process was carried out "only between regional security forces," and that peace could not be achieved.
They said that due to the disruption of public transport between Moyale and Ngale, travelers were forced to use alternative routes that were long and expensive.
