Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has been sentenced to 27 years and 3 months in prison for attempting to seize power in a military coup.
Five Supreme Court judges handed down the sentence hours after they convicted the former leader.
He was convicted of plotting to remain in power after losing the 2022 election to his leftist rival, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
The four judges found him guilty, with one voting to acquit him.
Bolsonaro's lawyers called the sentence "grossly excessive" and said they would appeal.
The Supreme Court has banned him from running in any political election until 2033.
Bolsonaro, who was placed under house arrest with the possibility of leaving the country, was not present in court when the decision was made.
