At least 23 security personnel were killed and 26 others injured after Islamist Boko Haram militants attacked a military base in western Chad, the army said in a statement on Tuesday.

The assault took place on Monday night in the Lake Chad region, an area that has repeatedly come under attack by armed groups operating across porous regional borders. According to the army, troops repelled the attack and operations were under way to clear the area following the incident.

Boko Haram has expanded its operations since 2009 from northeast Nigeria into neighbouring countries, including Chad, where military installations have increasingly been targeted in recent years.

Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Déby condemned the attack in a statement posted on Facebook. The Lake Chad basin has remained a focal point of regional security operations, with repeated cross-border attacks involving militant groups active in the area.

The attack highlights the persistent security challenges in the Sahel region, where terrorist groups continue to expand their territorial control and launch operations against military and civilian targets. Regional governments and international partners have been grappling with the escalating threat posed by these armed groups.
