Blast Near Tigray Interim Administration Office Raises Security Concerns in Mekelle

The Mekelle City Administration has reported an explosion near the office of the Tigray Interim Administration President, an incident authorities say is under investigation amid heightened security concerns in the regional capital.

According to a statement cited by Mekelle FM, the blast occurred on Monday at around 2:00pm local time in the vicinity of the presidential office. The administration described the incident as a deliberate act intended to intimidate the public, although it said no casualties or significant property damage were recorded.

Security forces have launched coordinated operations to identify those responsible, with officials calling on residents to cooperate with ongoing investigations aimed at apprehending the perpetrators and any associated networks.

The latest incident comes against a backdrop of repeated security alerts in Mekelle. Earlier this year, two explosions were reported near the perimeter of the Adi Haki campus of Mekelle University. City authorities had said investigations were ongoing, though no public updates have been issued on arrests or suspects.

The security situation coincides with renewed political activity in the region. The Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) recently decided to push for the reinstatement of the former regional council and government structures, while reports indicate a party meeting is expected on Tuesday, May 5, although details have not been officially confirmed.
