A BBC World Service investigation has found that several social media accounts created by Muslim and Somali influencers and fashion models are posting geopolitical propaganda content.

Pages with a profile picture of a smiling woman wearing a blue hijab have appeared on X, TikTok, and Facebook, and the posts shared on these pages are mostly about how much she loves her country, Somalia.

The BBC spoke to the woman in the photo, a lifestyle influencer, who said she was shocked by the situation and had never seen the social media pages.

The woman, who asked not to be named, said: "These accounts are not mine. They used my photos. I can't do anything to people who do this by pretending to be me."

This woman is one of many whose photos have been taken without their consent and used to promote propaganda for Somalia, Sudan, and the United Arab Emirates.

The BBC has not received a response to requests for comment from the UAE and Somali governments.
