Eight people were killed and 32 injured after a freight train collided with a public bus at a rail crossing in central Bangkok on Saturday, prompting Thai police to charge the train driver with negligence causing death.

Authorities said the bus had been stationary on the tracks at a red light when it was struck by the freight train, triggering a fire that engulfed the vehicle. The impact also dragged several nearby vehicles along the railway line, according to officials.

The train driver has been formally charged with negligence causing death, with police citing evidence they say indicates reckless conduct linked to the fatalities. Urumporn Koondejsumrit, head of Makkasan Police Station, told Reuters that the investigation remains ongoing and further charges may be considered.

“The train driver has been charged with negligence causing death, as evidence clearly indicates reckless conduct leading to fatalities,” he said. Police added that the bus driver is also expected to face charges. However, he has not yet been questioned as he remains under medical treatment, delaying formal proceedings against him.

Investigators are still assessing whether additional charges will be brought as part of the wider inquiry into the crash. Following the incident, authorities cleared the site and restored rail services. Deputy Transport Minister Siripong Angkasakulkiat said in a statement that safety measures and oversight along rail crossings will be strengthened to prevent similar accidents in the future.
