Australian Opposition Moves to Block Sale of Military Heritage Sites

Australia’s opposition Liberal–National Coalition has introduced legislation that would give Parliament the power to block the sale of defence properties deemed strategically or historically significant.

The proposed Defence Heritage Bill would require the government to seek parliamentary approval for the sale of designated sites through a disallowable instrument. It would also require the defence minister to explain why a proposed sale was in the national interest.

The bill targets several military properties, including Victoria Barracks in Sydney and Melbourne, HMAS Penguin, Lancer Barracks and Irwin Barracks.

The Coalition says the legislation is intended to protect Australia’s defence heritage and prevent the disposal of sites without adequate parliamentary scrutiny. It has also criticised the government’s approach to defence property sales, describing it as a “fire sale”.

The opposition says a petition opposing the sales has attracted 108,000 signatures.

The proposal is being advanced by Senator James Paterson, the Liberal Party’s shadow minister for defence. It would give Parliament a formal mechanism to scrutinise and potentially block sales that fall within the bill’s scope.
