Australian authorities have classified the mass shooting at a Hanukkah celebration on Bondi Beach as a terrorist act, following the deaths of 15 people and injuries to 25 others, including three children.

Federal Police Commissioner Krissy Barrett on Tuesday described the attack as “inspired by Islamic State.” The suspects, identified as a father and son aged 50 and 24, were located by police, with the elder suspect shot dead and the younger receiving treatment in hospital.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed that the assessment of extremist motives is supported by evidence, including “the presence of Islamic State flags in the vehicle that has been seized.”

The victims, aged between 10 and 87, were participating in the celebration when gunfire erupted on Sunday at Australia’s most famous beach. Among those present was Ahmed al Ahmed, who was filmed subduing and disarming one attacker before securing the weapon.

Authorities continue to investigate the incident while treating the injured, 10 of whom remain in critical condition.
