An Australian national broadcaster has been fined $99,200 for unfairly firing a presenter over a social media post about the war in Gaza.

The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) was wrong to fire radio presenter Antoinette Lattouf in December 2023 for posting posts that reflected her political views, the Federal High Court has ruled.

Lattouf was awarded $ 70,000 in damages, and on Wednesday, Judge Daryl Rangiah ruled that the ABC should be given a "substantial" fine to help it learn from its mistakes.

The broadcaster publicly apologized to the presenter, saying it had disappointed its listeners and staff.

Lattouf's dismissal sparked widespread public outrage and caused controversy within the ABC.

ABC was ordered to pay the fine within 28 days.
