Audi plans to invest approximately 4 billion US dollars in its first US manufacturing facility in Georgia, with production scheduled to begin in 2031 and an annual capacity of 200,000 vehicles.

The German luxury carmaker will build the plant at the Middle Georgia Megasite, where it expects to create approximately 4,500 jobs, according to an announcement by Georgia Governor Brian Kemp and Audi chief executive Gernot Döllner.

The company expects site preparation to begin in 2027, followed by construction in 2028. The facility will produce premium sport utility vehicles tailored to North American customers, allowing Audi to manufacture vehicles closer to one of its most important markets.

Döllner said Georgia would play a central role in the company’s ambitions in the US, citing its business environment, skilled workforce and potential to support Audi’s long-term growth. He said local production would bring the company closer to customers and strengthen its global competitiveness.

Audi selected Georgia based on factors including workforce availability, access to consumers, proximity to automotive suppliers and the speed at which the site could be developed, according to the announcement.

The Middle Georgia Megasite has been prepared through cooperation between state authorities and local development bodies representing Peach, Houston and Macon-Bibb counties. Industrial utilities are located near the site, and preliminary assessments have been completed to support development.

Georgia’s economic development authorities said the project would be supported by workforce training programmes. Georgia Quick Start, the state’s workforce training initiative, will work with Audi to develop specialised curricula and a dedicated training facility, while technical colleges will help prepare employees for the new plant.

The location also offers rail links to the Norfolk Southern network and access to the ports of Savannah and Brunswick, as well as Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

The investment adds to Georgia’s efforts to attract international manufacturers, particularly in the automotive industry, by preparing industrial sites and developing workforce training programmes.

Audi said the factory would be designed to meet future manufacturing requirements, with an emphasis on efficiency and flexibility as customer preferences and market demand evolve.

The Audi Group, headquartered in Ingolstadt, Germany, also includes Bentley, Lamborghini and Ducati.
