The African Union has condemned a series of coordinated militant attacks across Mali, as fresh reporting indicates the assaults involved multiple armed groups targeting military positions across several regions of the West African state.

The attacks, which took place on 4 July 2026, struck locations including Gao, Anefis, Aguelhok, Sévaré and Kenioroba, spanning northern, central and southern Mali, according to Reuters and other international reports.

Militant groups, including the al-Qaeda-linked Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) and the Tuareg-led Azawad Liberation Front (FLA), have claimed responsibility for the coordinated offensive, with claims of seizing several military positions that could not be independently verified, Reuters reported.

The Malian army said it repelled parts of the assault and carried out counter-operations, reporting casualties among attackers, although full casualty figures and battlefield outcomes remain contested, according to Reuters.

The latest attacks come against the backdrop of a prolonged insurgency in Mali, where armed groups have increasingly coordinated operations in recent years. Previous large-scale offensives in April 2026 saw similar joint actions by JNIM and FLA targeting military bases, airports and strategic towns, including parts of Bamako’s security perimeter, according to international reporting.

The African Union said the July attacks highlight the persistent threat of terrorism and violent extremism across Mali and the wider Sahel region, calling for strengthened regional cooperation to restore stability and protect civilians.

In a statement issued from Addis Ababa, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, expressed solidarity with Mali’s government and called for sustained international and regional efforts against extremist violence.

The AU reiterated its support for Malian authorities and broader continental initiatives aimed at countering armed groups operating across the Sahel, where instability has persisted despite ongoing military and foreign security assistance.
