The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Yusuf, has expressed deep concern over the unfolding situation in northern Ethiopia, calling for urgent high-level attention to the ongoing tensions between the Federal Government and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF).

In a statement released on January 30, 2026, Yusuf highlighted reports of serious human rights violations in several areas of Tigray, as confrontations between the two sides continue.

“The situation in the Tigray region is being closely monitored as it unfolds,” he said, underscoring the need for dialogue between federal authorities and Tigrayan forces to address the conflict. Recent clashes have been reported particularly in Tigray and Amhara, further complicating efforts to stabilise the region.

Yusuf reaffirmed the African Union’s commitment to upholding the Pretoria Agreement, aimed at halting the two-year-long conflict. He noted that “preserving the results obtained through significant effort is a highly valuable and ongoing priority.”

The Commission’s statement reflects growing concern over the humanitarian and security challenges posed by the conflict and reiterates the AU’s call for sustained engagement and conflict resolution.
