AU Appoints Fathallah Sijilmassi Special Envoy for G20 and Global Affairs

The African Union has appointed Ambassador Fathallah Sijilmassi as Special Envoy for G20 and Global Affairs, giving him a mandate to support the bloc’s engagement with the G20 and other major international and multilateral platforms.

Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, chairperson of the African Union Commission, made the appointment as the bloc seeks to strengthen coordination among member states and promote African positions in global decision-making.

Sijilmassi will support Youssouf’s strategic engagement with the G20 and, on G20 matters, will operate under the authority of the AU G20 Sherpa and in line with the bloc’s G20 governance arrangements.

His mandate will also cover other international platforms, where he will consult AU member states, international partners and relevant stakeholders to promote coordinated African positions on issues of strategic importance to the continent.

The envoy will work with relevant AU departments and structures on issues including global governance, international financial architecture, sustainable development, trade, climate action and technology, as well as emerging challenges affecting Africa.

The appointment comes as African countries seek greater coordination in international forums and a stronger role in discussions shaping global economic and political affairs.

Youssouf expressed confidence in Sijilmassi’s diplomatic experience and knowledge of global affairs, entrusting him with supporting the AU’s strategic priorities and partnerships at the international level.

The appointment forms part of the AU’s efforts to advance its Agenda 2063 objectives and strengthen coordination of the continent’s engagement with global institutions.
