An attempted sexual assault in eastern Ethiopia was thwarted after a 24-year-old woman overpowered a man who allegedly entered her home at night, police said. The incident took place in Deder Woreda, in the East Hararghe Zone, according to the regional police.

The suspect is said to have entered the victim’s residence while she was asleep with intent to commit sexual assault. Police said the woman woke up during the incident, resisted the attack and managed to restrain the suspect before alerting security forces.

The suspect was later handed over to police and taken into custody. He was identified by authorities as Faran Abdi. Following investigation, prosecutors filed charges of attempted sexual assault.

A court in Deder Woreda sentenced him to six years and nine months in prison after finding him guilty. The court said the attempt was carried out against a sleeping victim, which it considered an aggravating factor in sentencing.

Police said the case was investigated and forwarded to prosecutors with supporting evidence before the court ruling. The swift action by the victim and prompt response by authorities have been praised locally as a strong example of community vigilance.

Security officials in the region continue to urge residents to remain alert and report suspicious activity, especially during night hours, as part of broader efforts to enhance personal safety in rural and semi-urban areas.

Overall, the successful resistance by the woman in eastern Ethiopia highlights the importance of personal empowerment and rapid community response in preventing violent crimes.
