US prosecutors filed 253 immigration-related criminal cases in Arizona during the week of August 15 to August 21, including cases involving alleged illegal entry, re-entry and migrant smuggling.

The US Attorney’s Office for the District of Arizona said 115 cases involved alleged illegal re-entry into the United States, while 120 people were charged with illegally entering the country.

Prosecutors also brought 14 cases against 17 people accused of smuggling migrants into or within the district. One defendant was charged with assaulting a federal agent.

The enforcement operations involved several federal agencies, including US Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Enforcement and Removal Operations and Homeland Security Investigations, US Border Patrol, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the FBI, the US Marshals Service and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

A case involving three drivers resulted in the apprehension of 16 migrants. Border Patrol agents said they followed Joshua David Estrada, who was driving a Toyota Tundra, to a field on August 14 where he met several other drivers.

Agents later stopped Estrada’s vehicle and two others travelling with him towards Phoenix. Authorities said Estrada was carrying six migrants, while a Nissan Rogue driven by Crystal Maria Vargas carried five and a Jeep driven by Erika Williams carried six.

The three were charged on August 17 with transportation of an illegal alien, according to the US Attorney’s Office.

The cases were brought under Operation Take Back America, a Justice Department initiative focused on immigration enforcement, cartels and transnational criminal organisations, as well as protecting communities from violent crime.
