Apple has unveiled the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, introducing a variable-aperture main camera, upgraded processors and longer battery life as the company seeks to expand the capabilities of its flagship smartphone.

The new models feature a 48-megapixel Fusion Main camera with variable aperture, allowing users to adjust the amount of light entering the lens and control depth of field. Apple said the feature provides greater control over photography and is being introduced on an iPhone for the first time.

The camera uses six laser-cut blades that transition between four aperture settings. Users can adjust the aperture manually through the Camera app, while an application programming interface will allow developers to incorporate aperture controls into their own applications.

Apple said a new camera sensor also improves image quality, particularly in low-light conditions, while producing sharper detail in group photographs.

The iPhone 18 Pro models are powered by Apple’s A20 Pro chip and a new-generation vapor chamber designed to improve sustained performance. Apple said the combination delivers the highest sustained performance it has achieved on an iPhone.

The iPhone 18 Pro Max also features the largest increase in battery life in the iPhone range, which Apple attributed to improvements in its silicon and a larger battery.

Both models feature a smaller Dynamic Island and run on iOS 27, with Apple Intelligence and Siri AI integrated into the operating system.

Apple said the devices are designed to combine AI capabilities with personal context while maintaining privacy and security.

The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max will be available in four finishes: black, silver, glacier and the new burgundy.

Pre-orders begin September 12, with the devices scheduled to become available from September 18.

“With iPhone 18 Pro, we’ve made advancements to the areas our users care about most: camera, performance, battery, and intelligence,” said Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice-president of Worldwide Marketing.

Apple said the new camera system is aimed at both general users and professional creators, with expanded controls for photography and video alongside upgrades to Photographic Styles and other video capabilities.
