Apple has introduced HomePod mini 2, adding an upgraded artificial intelligence-powered Siri assistant, new colour options and expanded audio capabilities, including four-speaker surround sound when paired with its latest Apple TV 4K.

The new smart speaker will be available from October 30, with pre-orders opening immediately in pink, green, blue, white and midnight, Apple said.

The launch centres on Siri AI, which is built on the latest generation of Apple Foundation Models and is expected to reach HomePod mini 2 through a future software update. The assistant is designed to understand personal context, draw on information from across supported applications and hold more natural conversations.

When connected to an iPhone or iPad that supports Apple Intelligence, Siri AI will be able to use personal context to help users retrieve information and complete tasks. These include finding a song mentioned in a text message, setting reminders linked to calendar events or locations, locating recipes in emails and adding ingredients to shopping lists.

The assistant will also be able to answer questions using up-to-date information from the web. Apple said the enhanced conversational capabilities and general knowledge features would be available to HomePod mini users even without an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone or iPad, once the relevant software update is released.

HomePod mini 2 uses Apple's S10 chip and computational audio technology to optimise sound performance in real time. Users can operate the speaker individually, pair two units for stereo sound or connect multiple speakers across different rooms.

When used with the fourth-generation Apple TV 4K, four HomePod mini 2 speakers can create a surround-sound setup. The system automatically identifies the speakers' positions and adjusts audio timing and levels to suit the room, according to Apple.

The speaker can also serve as an audio output for Mac computers, supporting activities including gaming, watching films and video calls.

Apple has added Sound Glow, a feature that makes the speaker's illuminated surface respond to music in real time. Album artwork can generate matching light effects, while selected soundscapes produce animations designed to create a calming atmosphere.

The device also serves as a hub for connected-home accessories, allowing users to control compatible locks, blinds, thermostats and lighting through voice commands or Apple's Home app. Users can create automated routines and manage supported accessories remotely.

HomePod mini 2 can recognise up to six household members by voice, allowing it to personalise certain functions, including music playback. Its Sound Recognition feature can detect smoke or carbon monoxide alarms and send notifications to a user's iPhone, iPad or Apple Watch.
