Apple Opens Houston Manufacturing Centre as US Production Push Expands

Apple has opened a 20,000-square-foot Advanced Manufacturing Centre in Houston to train small and medium-sized businesses in advanced production techniques as the company expands its manufacturing footprint in the US.

The centre, Apple’s second US manufacturing learning site, is located within the same Houston facility where the company produces and ships advanced artificial intelligence servers. Apple said it will also begin manufacturing Mac mini computers at the facility later this year.

The new centre will provide free training and educational programmes for businesses, entrepreneurs and, as the programme expands, local college students. Participants will have access to production equipment, interactive laboratories and manufacturing processes used in Apple’s own operations.

Training will cover advanced manufacturing principles, final assembly and design considerations for printed circuit board assembly. Participants will also work with production equipment and learn techniques including machine-learning-driven quality control and advanced automation.

Apple said the centre is intended to help businesses identify production problems and respond to them in real time. The first group of participating business leaders is receiving hands-on instruction from Apple engineers, including practical experience with factory-floor equipment, a holographic table, product assembly and laser etching.

Tim Cook, Apple’s chief executive, said the company had invested hundreds of millions of dollars in the Houston facility in less than nine months, established production and shipped its first advanced artificial intelligence servers.

“We believe in American workers and American ingenuity,” Cook said. “We want to build more than great products. We want to build the future of American manufacturing.”
