Anthropic CEO Vows Legal Fight Against U.S. Government Blacklisting

The artificial intelligence company Anthropic is preparing to challenge the U.S. government in court after the Pentagon labeled the company a national security supply-chain risk. The decision could prevent the firm and its AI tools from being used by military contractors and federal agencies.

The dispute centers on Anthropic’s refusal to allow its AI models to be used for mass surveillance of Americans or fully autonomous weapons. The Pentagon argued that vendors should not limit how the military uses technology in national security operations.

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei said the company has “no choice” but to challenge the designation in court, calling the move legally questionable and unprecedented for a U.S. technology company.

The conflict highlights growing tensions between Silicon Valley and the federal government as artificial intelligence becomes increasingly central to national defense and geopolitical competition.
