Analilia Mejia, a progressive Democrat and former organiser on Senator Bernie Sanders’ 2020 presidential campaign, has won a special election in northern New Jersey, with early results showing a decisive margin over Republican candidate Joe Hathaway. Mejia led Hathaway by nearly 40 percentage points in early returns, with the race called within minutes of polls closing on Thursday.

The result reduces the Republican margin in the US House of Representatives and adds momentum for Democrats heading into the November midterm elections. She will take the seat previously held by former Representative Mikie Sherrill, a moderate Democrat who vacated the post after being elected governor in November.

Campaign filings showed Mejia raised about 1.1 million US dollars through March 27, more than twice Hathaway’s 525,000 US dollars. She also entered the final phase of the contest with roughly three times the cash-on-hand of her Republican rival.

The broader campaign cycle was shaped by a contested Democratic primary that drew significant outside spending from the American Israel Public Affairs Committee’s super PAC. The group targeted former Representative Tom Malinowski over his position on Israel, but the intervention was unsuccessful as Mejia defeated Malinowski by about 1,000 votes.

Mejia’s primary victory and subsequent general election win mark a continuation of the district’s recent Democratic performance in both congressional and statewide elections.

Overall, Analilia Mejia’s decisive victory in the northern New Jersey House seat provides a significant boost for Democrats and signals continued strength in the district ahead of the midterm elections.
